Rockland church is built for $250 |
"Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths."

Micah 4:2

A Sunday school was started during 1874 in a local school building because the closest town was too far away to travel to in the winter. The church was able to interest a United Brethren minister, Reverend St. Clair Ross, in preaching at the school.
One of the ranchers, Henry Wilson Chiles came to the Mount Vernon Canyon in the fall of 1866. He teamed up with Abraham L. Hess and Abraham Hartzell to build the church.

Chiles donated the land to the new church on December 12, 1879 with the condition that “its gates shall stand ajar for any other religious denominations to worship therein.”

The church has become a very popular community church today, that still tries to hold to the idea of allowing all who wish to worship there.

The actual construction of the original church was begun sometime between 1875 and 1878.* A local newspaper reported in December 6, 1879 that "We thought we would dish you up a few items that might be of interest. The United Brethren denomination are building a nice little church which is nearing completion and is mostly paid for.” The final cost of the church was $250.
